Joey & Stephanie’s Backyard Wedding Video in Vincennes, IN

Stephanie and Joey's story was not an easy one to tell. First of all, Stephanie has been one of my biggest supporters since I started sharing my wedding films back in 2013. A videographer was her top priority. I was one of the first people she called after Joey popped the question. I did not want to let her down.

The second reason is the gravity of Stephanie's story. As a teenager, Stephanie and her brother Garrett lost their father. Through my time knowing them, it was apparent that he is still a big part of their lives. On the wedding day, amidst all the joy and familiar faces, you could tell her father rested on the minds of many. Bittersweet came to mind.

Although he was not "there," he was "there" in a sense. Thus, in the edit, I asked myself the big question, "how can I show his presence on the wedding day while also keeping the day about Joey and Stephanie?"

Ironically during the edit, I watched the movie "Onward." In the film, Ian and his older brother Barley also lost their father at an early age. In hopes of seeing their father one more time, they begin a quest to complete a spell that would allow them to see their father. The film wrestles with the question of how can we bring someone back from the dead? In typical Pixar fashion, they deliver an ending with striking truth and depth. Like in real life, Ian ends up not seeing his dad. He can't bring him back to life. With that, his list of things to do with dad goes unchecked. Heartbroken and about to toss his list to the ground, he comes to a realization. Although he didn't get to play catch, laugh, dance, or get a hug from dad, his brother was right there the whole time.

Our loved ones might be gone, but they are not dead. They live on through the stories we tell and the people they affected. It couldn't be more clear that her father was still there on the wedding day.

Though gone for the father reveal, five strong father figures stood where he could not. Though gone for the father/daughter dance, her brother stood in. His spirit took many forms.

Although her dad is a big part of her story, I also wanted to make sure the film emphasized the start of something new—a new story for the couple. A story that honors where they have been but eagerly moves toward what's possible through their love.

This display of humanity was humbling to witness and an honor to document. For that reason, I'm grateful to have served Stephanie & Joey's families.
